Probably more widely known as Sloppy Joes, these can be made with ground beef or
ground turkey. This homemade version is light years ahead of anything you can buy in an
envelope or can, and really just as easy. I like to serve these with paper-thin slices of red
onion.
Ingredients
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 lb. ground beef or ground turkey
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped fine
1/2 cup best-quality ketchup
1/2 cup best-quality chili sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon coarse salt
freshly cracked black pepper
1/3 cup water
6 sesame seed topped hamburger buns, warmed
Method
Brush a skillet with oil and warm over moderate heat, 30 seconds. Add beef [or turkey]
and onion and sauté 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add all remaining ingredients
[except buns] and simmer, uncovered, 10 minutes. Spoon mixture between split buns
and serve immediately.
