| Tom's Seven Layer Bars |
| These were a personal favorite when I was coming up. I’ve spiced them up a little for a more “adult” flavor. These are better than the ones I remember Ingredients 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 10 whole graham crackers, pulverized to crumbs 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup chocolate chips [bittersweet if you can find them] 1 1/3 cups shredded coconut 1 1/3 cups crushed toffee 1 1/2 cups sweetened condensed milk [15 oz] 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon finely ground black pepper, optional 2 teaspoons orange zest, optional Method Preheat oven to 350° Mix the butter, graham cracker crumbs, cinnamon, and ginger together until well blended. Press the mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 9 x 13” baking dish to form a thin crust. Sprinkle on the nuts and spread evenly to form a layer followed by a layer of the chocolate chips and a layer of coconut. In a small bowl, mix the condensed milk with the vanilla. Pour the mixture evenly over the top of the bars and bake at 350° for 20 – 25 minutes, until lightly golden. Remove, bring to room temperature. To facilitate cutting, chill in the refrigerator 2 hours. |
