Ingredients
Sauce
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 Tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
2 lbs. ground sirloin
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
1 12 oz can tomato paste
1/2 tomato paste can filled with water
coarse salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
2 cups cottage cheese
2 eggs, lightly beaten
9 lasagna noodles, boiled
sliced mozzarella, approx. 9 slices [more to patch]
grated parmesan cheese, approx. 1/2 cup
Method
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
For the sauce: sauté the onion over med. heat in the butter or oil until limp and golden
add the ground sirloin and cook until it is no longer pink; drain the grease. Add the rest of the
ingredients, one at a time, stirring to incorporate and simmer about 1 hour until flavors meld; taste
to correct seasonings. Keep warm.
Mix together the cottage cheese and eggs, set aside.
In a lightly oiled 9 x 13 pan, layer: 3 noodles [length wise], 1/3cottage cheese mixture, 1/3 sauce, 3
slices mozzarella [patching as needed], 1/3parmesan. You will end up with 3 layers.
Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour until cheese is bubbling hot.
Allow to set for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
